Digital Dimensions of Research Collaboration in Tackling Health Inequalities: An Eco-System Approach in the South Tees Region

About this Talk

Researchers from Teesside University have been awarded £5.4 million by the National Institute for Health Research to work with local authorities and communities in the South Tees region to develop a research eco-system to help tackle poor health outcomes and inequalities. The health of people in the region is generally worse than England averages, with Middlesbrough being identified as the most deprived local authority nationally at neighbourhood level.

Two key aims of the project are to increase research capacity and capability among health providers and to build ‘research literacy’ in targeted communities through a ‘routes to research’ approach with schools, colleges and adult education. This talk addresses the digital dimensions underpinning this collaboration through an exploration of the role digital technologies can play in the development and sharing of research outputs.

Questions addressed by the talk will address:

- How can routinely gathered health data be stored and accessed by multiple parties?

- What kinds of health research do practitioners lack access to and how can simplified routes to this be facilitated online?

- How can research into health outcomes be made easily available to targeted communities?

- How can links be facilitated between parties interested in conducting or taking part in research?

A better understanding of the complexities of the research environment regarding health inequalities and the role digital technologies can play in providing a supporting infrastructure for research collaborations.
