Bridging the digital divide

A Talk by Rebecca Beal , Anna Buckle and Charlotte Woodcock

About this Talk

Since the Covid-19 pandemic, the adoption of digital technologies (DT), by the National Health Service (NHS) has accelerated like never before. There has also been a surge in patients’ uptake and use of DT. However there remains large numbers of people who remain digitally excluded resulting in inequity’s around access to information and services. We know that access to DT can support people to understand and manage their health conditions and reduce social isolation through remote contact. Initial scoping within our area indicates a huge range of apps, equipment, wearables, and platforms that have emerged onto the health and care scene over recent years. However, there are very few schemes that provided people with training or education to make use of these specific technologies and nothing provided by health and care to support their patients and users to engage with specific health and care DT's. So how do we start to bridge the digital divide? This is the story of how a small NHS service, Staying Well team, is working collaboratively with partners from the Integrated Care Board and a digital health care organisation, Redmoor Health Ltd, to pilot the delivery of 'digital coaching' to support patients to gain skills and build confidence to use DT to promote self-management and reduce social isolation/ loneliness. The talk will include the astounding initial impact and benefits of the digital coaching support for our patients which has resulted in support and additional financial backing to extend and develop the pilot. We will talk about our successes/ what's worked well, pitfalls and learning; the importance of co-production and evaluation and how we plan to further develop the pilot and plans for the future including how our insights have the potential to support scaling up and spread across the organisation as we move towards and adopt a more digital way of working.
