Digital in the UK public sector is here to stay. The cultures, processes, business models and technologies of many organisations have changed significantly over the previous decade. Many teams in the sector now have recognisably ‘internet-era’ ways of working: working in the open, user-centred design, iterating services, and doing all of this in multidisciplinary teams.
Yet, in 2022, this all happens despite the wider culture, not because of it. The UK public sector remains a place that prefers stability over change, predictability over innovation, and announceables over sustained reform. Some might argue these characteristics are by-design. But governments, supported by the public sector, now face challenges such as global pandemics and a climate emergency. Responsive, adaptable, innovative government is now a necessity, not a luxury.
Dave will share seven lessons learnt working in the UK public sector, and reinforced by experiences in the global public sector, and into the private sector.
